35 MM FILM

In an era dominated by digital cameras and smartphones, the allure of 35mm film photography continues to captivate hearts and minds, especially in the realm of wedding photography. While digital technology offers convenience and efficiency, there's an irreplaceable charm and authenticity to film that resonates deeply with couples seeking to immortalize their special day.

When Gillian and Zach first reached out to us to photograph their wedding they told us it was going to be taking place at a campground.
In the hundreds of varying venues from lighthouses to barns I have attended, I had yet to witness a wedding at a campground. I was beyond intrigued.

The couple rented out the entire campground in Upstate New York for their guests to come and stay a few days before and after the wedding. Complete with all of the essential campground activities such as kickball, basketball, and canoeing, it felt like what a campground experience should feel like. No counselors that force you to participate in icebreaker group activities. Just your closest family and friends day drinking in swing hammocks, gathering for impromptu games, and escaping to your private cabin when you needed a mid-day nap to prepare for the inevitable late-night gatherings in the billiard room.

We knew it would be the perfect opportunity to capture some 35mm film photos the afternoon of their wedding while all attendees enjoyed their adult campground getaway. Wanting the images to feel like they were captured in 1995, 35mm film was perfect for photographing the day more nostalgically. We all remember those disposable Kodak cameras with their grainy film look, the days before camera phones and digital cameras. Today, film photography holds onto its timeless look while taking advantage of modern equipment. Unedited images that capture moments of life in their immediate beauty.

A Nostalgic Elegance

There's something inherently romantic about the grainy texture and soft hues of film photography. It transports us to a bygone era, evoking nostalgia and timeless elegance. In the context of weddings, where every moment is imbued with emotion and significance, this nostalgic quality adds an extra layer of depth to the photographs, creating images that are not just documentation but pieces of art infused with sentiment.

Embracing Imperfections

One of the most enchanting aspects of film photography is its imperfections. Unlike digital images, which can be instantly edited and perfected, film captures the raw, unfiltered essence of the moment. From subtle light leaks to unexpected blurs, these imperfections lend a sense of authenticity and spontaneity to the images, reflecting the unpredictability and beauty of real life.

Timeless Aesthetics

The aesthetic appeal of film photography is unparalleled. The rich tones, subtle contrasts, and organic feel of film create images that have a timeless quality, transcending trends and fads. Whether it's the dreamy pastels of Kodak Portra or the classic black and white of Ilford HP5, each film stock has its own unique character, allowing photographers to curate a visual narrative that perfectly complements the couple's style and personality.

Cultivating Intimacy and Connection

Shooting with film requires a slower, more deliberate approach. Without the luxury of unlimited digital shots, photographers must carefully compose each frame, fostering a deeper connection with their subjects in the process. This intimate rapport allows couples to relax and be themselves, resulting in photographs that are not just posed portraits but genuine expressions of love and emotion.

Preserving Memories for Generations

In a world where digital files can easily be lost or corrupted, the tangible nature of film provides a sense of permanence and longevity. Wedding albums filled with film photographs become cherished heirlooms, passed down through generations as a testament to love and commitment. Unlike fleeting digital images that are often forgotten in the depths of a hard drive, film photographs have a tangible presence that can be enjoyed and admired for years to come.

In an age of rapid technological advancement (especially during the advent of AI), the enduring appeal of 35mm film in wedding photography reminds us of the power of tradition, nostalgia, and authenticity. From its timeless aesthetics to its ability to cultivate intimacy and connection, film photography offers a unique and irreplaceable experience that transcends the confines of digital imagery. For couples seeking to preserve the magic of their special day in a way that is both timeless and elegant, 35mm film photography remains the ultimate choice.
